At the Vyne School we are passionate about giving our students a broad and balanced experience of careers through our careers guidance programme.
In the rapidly changing education landscape, with changes to qualifications and progression routes, and despite the restrictions placed upon us by Covid-19, it is so important that students and parents are well informed in order to be able to prepare for their future.

Measuring and assesses the impact of The Vyne School careers programme on students

We constantly monitor the proposed pathways of our students from year 11, to ensure we have provided the best advice and care possible to ensure our pupils make what is the best decision for them and their future. Coupled with guidance and the opportunity to receive a tailored Careers Interview students are guided and supported throughout Year 11.

Our Careers Programme

We cover careers across the age ranges through assemblies, discrete lessons as part of our Citizenship Programme in Key Stages 3 and 4 and an ever-increasing range of events and activities. We work closely with the Basingstoke Consortium to provide opportunities for students to engage outside of the school environment with employment and employers.

Careers Curriculum

All of our subject specialists are passionate about the careers that their subject could lead students towards, but we also have dedicated careers lessons delivered through Citizenship, which give students the time and space to discuss and research their future aspirations.

In support of the school Careers Information, Advice and Guidance Policy, our Careers curriculum units aim to:

  • Contribute to strategies for raising achievement, especially by increasing motivation
  • Support inclusion, challenge stereotyping and promote equality of opportunity

Encourage participation in continued learning including HE and FE

  • Develop enterprise and employment skills
  • Focus students on their future aspirations
  • Involve parents and carers

Vyne School Discrete Careers Curriculum 2019-20

Year 8


Focus: Encouraging students to evaluate their own skill and increasing self-awareness.
Unit draws on the Barclays Life Skills programme for some lessons. Lessons include: Is that really me; How can I show I have desirable skills; What can be gained from volunteering; How can I handle challenges; Personal Impact and Online reputation

Year 9


This unit aims to support year 9 students in the run up to finalising their option choices. It covers approximately 8 weeks between year 9 returning to school after Christmas up until the point in March when they finalise their option choices with a senior member of staff. This is a unit which encourages all students to think, discuss and debate, to ensure they have thoroughly considered the choices they make. Lessons include:

  • Why are some subjects perceived as more ‘valuable’? What’s my view?
  • Does STEM have an image problem?
  • What kind of career might suit my personality?
  • Pathways to my future

Year 10


The purpose of this unit is to support year 10 students in the understanding and selection of their work experience and to embed some of the behaviours and skills that they will need in the world of work.
Year 10 also take part in a CV writing day and a mock interview day as part of this work.
Lessons include:

  • How will work experience help me?
  • How do I sell myself in applications?
  • Follow up phone calls and interview skills
  • Work experience dilemmas

Year 11


The purpose of this term is to provide all year 11 with a first-hand experience of all of the post 16 local providers including:

  • Basingstoke College of Technology
  • Queen Mary’s College
  • Peter Symonds College
  • Andover College
  • Sparsholt College

Following this, students’ will experience virtual tours and presentations from a wide variety of courses and will be given the chance to experience student life. Students will be given opportunity to complete both their Curriculum Vitae’s (CVs) and Personal Statements. During this term the intention is to provide all year 11 with a further careers interview. Tutors will support and monitor students to ensure applications are completed.

EBP South/Basingstoke Consortium is a charity that works with young people, helping to give them the motivation, self-confidence, attitudes and skills for adult life.  They provide our careers adviser, Mrs Singlehurst, who is in school and available to meet students on Mondays and Tuesdays. As the Careers Adviser she is qualified to Level 6 in Careers Advice and Guidance, Mrs Singlehurst with support from tutors will arrange a careers meeting for each Year 11 student. Students are welcome to can contact the Careers Advisor by email.

Work Experience 2021 – Current Year 10

Work experience is an invaluable opportunity for students to experience the world of work  and build their skills in teamwork, communication and responsibility as well as testing out potential careers.

In September when we held our Year 10 Parent Information Evening we would have explained the process of securing work experience.
Currently this is on hold. But, as this is written, we a re in dialogue with the Orgnaisation that oversees out Work Experience and a number of employees who are keen to start to look at what possibilities might ensue.

Fujitsu Partnership with The Vyne School

Fujitsu employs over 14,000 people in the UK & Ireland, with total revenues exceeding £1.8 billion. Offering an integrated product and service portfolio, Fujitsu deliver consulting, applications, technology products, systems integration and managed services, including cloud-based solutions, for customers across both public and private sectors, including retail, financial services, telecoms, government, defence and consumer IT. We are very lucky that the Fujitsu in Basingstoke provide a wide array of Careers Information Advice and Guidance to our students through a variety of activities.

We have a busy calendar of events linked to careers and raising aspirations among our students. Covid-19 restrictions have prevented some activities developing but we are extremely hopeful that in the new year we will be able to pick some up and continue with them, even if a slightly abridged format.
The strong partnership we have forged with Fujitsu provides us with the capacity to host a significant number of events including:

Year 7 Enterprise Day

A whole day where students get the opportunity to develop design put together in preparation for a final presentation and award ceremony

Year 8 garden/patio renovation project

Fujitsu and Vyne staff and students are creating a wonderful area of quietness
Student Voice (school council) meetings

Fujitsu staff attend meetings to offer support and advice
Year 11 Apprenticeship Assembly

Fujitsu present to Year 11 the range of opportunities available through apprenticeships with Fujitsu.

Year 10 CV Workshops

Staff spend the day working with Year 10 guiding them on how to create and put together a CV suitable for presentation.
Year 10 Formal Interview Day

Students attend school in suits and suitable work attire, ready for a 20-minute interview with Fujitsu staff, to help them prepare for the wider world of work.
